UK Bingo Cockney Ryhming Slang
Here is a list of the most widely used bingo phrases
that are used in British bingo halls. The majority of the phrases have
derived from Cockney Rhyming Slang, which for the un-initiated stems from
the East of London, where Eastenders on BBC televevision is filmed. In
this area common days words are assigned phrases that rhyme with that
word, even though they may not be shorter. For example "Dog and Bone"
and "Sharon Stone" are both known to refer to "Phone",
"Apple and Pairs" to "Stairs" etc. In bingo halls
this phemonen has continued, for example "Buckle my shoe" is
32, etc.
Bingo terms can aslo be based upon actual numbers,
for example "Old age pension" is 65, "Bullseye" is 50, "Par for the course"
is 72. Sometimes the term is based upon the shape of the numbers. For
example 8 looks like a fat lady, hence 88 is "Two Fat ladies".Similarly,
2 looks like the neck of a swan, so 22 is "Two Little Ducks", 7 is a little
crutch, 3 is a flea etc.
